No matter the size, a backyard is still a backyard. And your backyard should be a place where you can enjoy being outside, connected to nature. Make this space a sanctuary where you can relax, dine and entertain, even with minimal square footage. Here are some tips for maximizing your limited space to create a yard that all of your neighbors will envy.

Step Up, Step Out
Using materials like stones and decking, you can create layers and dimensions, separating areas into smaller, room-like spaces. Even the smallest steps or changes in elevation can open up a small space, especially if you change the flooring, such as grass in one area, gravel in another.

Simplify Your Garden
Instead of using the ground space for a garden, utilize planters and containers instead. You will appreciate the flexibility of being able to move them around as needed, rather than being stuck with one area for plants and another for furniture. You can also use planters to play up the decor, mixing patterns and matching color schemes.

Minimize Furniture
It’s obvious that the less seats you need, the more space you have. However, eliminating furniture may not be for you if you choose to entertain. Instead of purchasing multiple chairs, consider a bench. Incorporate seating in the landscape, such as adding cushions to a rock wall and strategically placing a table. This will open up more space for entertaining while utilizing the natural architecture.

Light It Up
Lighting can change the tone of any space, indoor and out. Adding details, like string lights overhead, will make the space feel larger while accentuating the cozy aesthetic. Consider adding task lighting, such as a sconce by the doorway and over the grill, as well as landscape lighting in the gardens and walkway. By lighting individual areas, the backyard will seem larger.

Style the Space
With a limited amount of room, you want to be sure you give your backyard a style that is simple, yet distinguished. Just like any interior room in your home, cohesive decor is important to the overall feel of the space. Play off the natural elements and plants. Choose a statement piece or color and build around it. For maximum space, select minimal accessories with big character and a pop of color.
