3 Things to Check Off Your List After Moving to a New City

Moving to a city, while arguably more exciting than moving up the street, can also be more complicated. From booking cross-border movers to transferring medical records, there are a few more tasks to be completed, and sometimes, the chaos of moving causes people to forget to take care of them. Here’s what you absolutely need to do when you move to a new city:

Update address information. Make sure your new address and a valid phone number are on file with government offices, financial institutions you deal with, utility companies and any other organizations you receive written correspondence with on a regular basis. It’s a good idea to sign up for mail forwarding, which will automatically send mail that’s been sent to your former address to your new one for a set period of time.

Register to vote. Depending on where you’re moving to, you may need to provide updated address information or identification if you want to vote locally. This is a great time to get familiar with your local polling station, as well.

Register your vehicle or get a new a driver’s license. Most provinces give you a set period of time to update your license and register your automobile, but you might face tickets or a hefty fine if you forget to do this within that timeframe. If you take public transit, make sure to purchase a transit pass and familiarize yourself with the system.
