Bedroom Staging Mistakes You Might Be Making

Ah, the bedroom. Let’s be honest: When you’re browsing open houses, it’s the first room you’re really excited to see. If you’re selling, you want to make sure it looks extra restful. With bedrooms, however, it’s easier than you might think to make a decorating faux pas, whether it’s the wrong paint colour or an issue with furniture placement. Here’s a few common mistakes we see:

The Wrong Paint Colour
Bedrooms can look equally spectacular in light, romantic tones or dark, moody hues. Either palettes have their advantages, but it’s best to avoid bright colours like reds and yellows. Whether you go dark or light, stick to neutral shades and luxurious textiles that look and feel restful.

Wall-to-Wall Carpet
Though carpets have a cozy feel to them, when they’re wall-to-wall they look dated. They’re also not ideal for buyers who have pets, kids or allergies, which means you might be cutting out a portion of potential buyers unknowingly. Of course, carpets are also notoriously hard to clean and expensive to replace. If you crave texture underfoot, consider an area rug.

Lack of Greenery
Aside from looking fresh and peaceful, houseplants can purify the air and promote increased mood. If you have lots of natural light in your bedroom, consider a sun-loving plant like a Ficus or Bird of Paradise. If your room is on the shadowy side – or gardening just isn’t your forte – consider a resilient houseplant that requires minimal maintenance, like a succulent or snake plant.

The Wrong Sized Rug
Rugs can be a great addition to a bedroom, especially for those cold Canadian mornings, when waking up and immediately sinking your feet into something warm and fluffy feels amazing. Many people choose a rug that’s either too big or too small, however. A good rule of thumb is to either choose a rug that’s large enough for your bed and both nightstands to sit on top, or a smaller one to the side.
