5 Interior Design Principles You Should Be Aware Of

When it comes to luxury property, design and layout are even more essential than in a traditional home. Since buyers are paying for the best of the best, they expect the design of this property to be one that not only flows but impresses, from the entrance to the cellar and every room in between. Here’s how to ensure the design makes buyers want to invest in your property.

Scale and Proportion
Scale and proportion ensure the items in the room fit well and look like they belong together in this space. Scale is applied to the size of the objects in regard to the room they’re in, while proportion refers to the size of items in relation to each other.

Balance
In interior design, balance refers to the distribution of weight of objects throughout the room. Light or airy items carry less visual weight than dark, dense items. To create visual balance, divide each room into four equal areas, and layout each area until each section appears to have the same amount of furniture and decor.

Rhythm
You create rhythm in design through repetition. This is often achieved through accent colours used sporadically throughout the room, so the eye moves around the room through these pops of colour. It should be repeated a minimum of three times to achieve this effect.

Emphasis
Emphasis is all about the focal point of the room. Architectural features that are built into the home such as a fireplace naturally make for an excellent focal point, but if the room doesn’t have that kind of feature, you can create it by using a particularly striking piece of furniture that will become the centrepiece of the room.

Contrast
Use contrast and variety to create visual interest in the space. When everything is the same colour or finish, it can look drab and blend together. Find items in the same shape but different colours, or the same colour but different shape to provide visual variety.
