Canada’s long winters and lack of sunlight can make keeping plants alive a challenge. If you love the idea of turning your home into a leafy, green oasis full of houseplants, but you’re not exactly a pro, don’t worry. Believe it or not, not every houseplant is created equal and some of them require more maintenance than others. Here are some entry-level houseplants.

Spider Plant
Not only do these guys naturally purify air, but they’re super easy to care for. They nurture themselves by producing off-shoots and they tend to do well in low-light conditions, which is great if you have a room in your house that could use some greenery but doesn’t get a ton of natural light. They look great in hanging planters too!

Peace Lily
Not only do they look elegant, but peace lilies are another option that thrive in low-light areas. Got a tiny bedroom? A den with no window? These make a great addition. They also produce lovely white blossoms, and, much like the spider plant, are known for their air purification properties.

Snake Plant
These have been popping up in professional décor shots all over the place. Not only do they have striking colouring and a dramatic, geometric shape to them, but they’re a super low-maintenance option for the gardener who doesn’t have time to, well, garden. They’re happy to live in a dark or shadowed environment and they can withstand a bit of watering forgetfulness.

Everyone loves an Instagram-worthy home full of lush blooms and tropical vines, but in a Canadian climate—not to mention a busy schedule—it’s not always a practical option. Give your plant game an edge with these low-maintenance and low-light-friendly houseplants!
