As soon as the snow starts melting in Canada, it’s time for home renovations to begin en masse. Whether it’s building that deck you’ve always wanted or tackling that sketchy basement bathroom, it seems like spring brings a renewed sense of motivation with it. Here’s how to make the most of that:
Book your contractor and get organized in advance. Contractors often book up well in advance, so it pays to schedule them as soon as possible. Depending on the nature of your project, you might have other tasks that risk getting bottlenecked too, including sourcing material, getting permits approved or booking elevators.
Do your research. Though it can be tempting to try and snag a deal on contractors—or riskier, to do the work yourself—when you’re dealing with a major renovation project, you definitely don’t want to cut corners. Do your research, ask contractors for references and leave yourself plenty of time to shop around.
Tackle outdoor projects early in the season. Getting your outdoor renos done— whether that’s landscaping, refinishing your deck, building that gazebo you’ve always wanted, or anything in between—lets you enjoy it all summer long.
Remember that sometimes the best renovations aren’t visible. While glam kitchen renos and newly-installed soaker tubs tend to grab the spotlight when we’re talking about long-awaited home renovations, a lot of projects that increase value and comfort are the ones you can’t see, like electrical or plumbing upgrades. Structural or safety-related renovations should always be prioritized before anything else.
Find a balance between ROI and comfort. Many people start renovations with the idea that they will add resale value or improve a home’s efficiency. However, upgrades that add functionality and comfort to your day-to-day life are important too, especially since you’re the one living in your home!
