Many Canadians are turning to natural remedies for increased health. Essential oils have been gaining in popularity over the last few years and for good reason. They’ve been used for thousands of years in some cultures for everything from helping with depression to detoxifying and getting rid of bacteria.
Here are some ways oils may help you feel better and decrease your trips to the doctor.
Hormone Balancing
There are specific oils for balancing hormones that may be out of whack. Geranium, thyme and clary sage help to balance both estrogen and progesterone levels. Geranium and rose, in particular, help menopausal women experiencing symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings.
Digestion Support
Some oils like ginger help to improve digestion. They can also be of help for those with gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Peppermint oil also helps with IBS. Other oils you might wish to explore for digestion help are juniper berry, fennel, marjoram, black pepper and lemongrass.
Brain Food
Certain essential oils have been known to boost brain function. Oils like lavender and peppermint have been shown to have neuroprotective and cognitive boosting effects and may help people with dementia. They can also reduce inflammation.
More Get Up and Go
Essential oils with a citrus hint like orange and lemon will boost energy levels. Combine them with peppermint and frankincense for increased energy of body and mind.
Fight Off Infections
Oregano oil has powerful properties to boost your immune system. Take a few drops at the first signs of a sore throat or cold. Several studies have indicated that some essential oils kill various types of viral, fungal and bacterial pathogens. During lab studies, frankincense demonstrated anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects. Oils that are also helpful in this regard are myrrh, eucalyptus, ginger, lemon and peppermint.
Glowing Skin
Oil of chamomile is wonderful to add to a skincare regime. It has been known to fight blemishes, hard-to-treat acne and reduces redness and inflammation. Chamomile not only makes a relaxing tea, but it can be your skin’s best friend as well.
Clean Air
Essential oils can also be diffused into the air for many health benefits. Known as aromatherapy, these oils impart their benefits as you breathe them in. Many people prefer to use oils in this fashion. Oils can be mixed and matched for diffusing. Tea tree oil is especially good for its disinfecting properties. Lavender can be used at bedtime for a calming and stress-free environment conducive to sleep. If you have pets, however, keep in mind that not all of these are safe around your furry friends.
