Finding the time and motivation to exercise can be challenging, and people who live in urban areas often find it especially difficult to commit themselves to physical activity.

That’s because city life usually means a busy life, which can cut into exercise time. And with so many wonderful restaurants to visit, it also can be tough to focus on healthy eating. Here are some tips to incorporate a healthy lifestyle into your routine.

  1. Take the Stairs: Skipping the elevator and heading for the stairs offers terrific exercise, as it burns fat, tones your body, and is healthy for your lungs and cardiovascular system. If your apartment is so high up that you’ll be out of breath if you take the stairs, get off at the elevator a few floors early and climb away.

 

  1. Take a Tour of Your Neighborhood: Walking is great exercise, so why not make your walk scenic and educational? Do some research and find noteworthy destinations in your area—historical landmarks, parks, and maybe a path along a river. There may even be groups in your area that walk, either for exercise or during tours that point out highlights of the community.

 

  1. Join a Gym: Actually, the real advice here is to use the gym. If you live in a building with a health center, take advantage of it, it’s just an elevator ride (or better yet stairway) away, and you’re paying for it. Or you can sign up for a membership at a neighborhood gym. Talk to an expert who can help you develop a routine or do some research to find the right workout for you.

 

  1. Good Eats: One of the reasons people choose to live in an urban area is to eat at amazing restaurants. But fine dining doesn’t have to be unhealthy. Look for low-calorie options on menus. There are also vegetarian restaurants and seafood spots that serve meals that won’t necessarily pack on the pounds.

There are two types of people—those who commit themselves to physical fitness, and those who don’t. These ideas can help you become the kind of person who does.
