When it comes to giving holiday gifts, some of us make it a point to go all out and give the most memorable gifts. If that hasn’t been you so far, but you want to step up your game and impress someone special this year, here’s how to make it happen.
Take advantage of holiday sales. You can get incredible gifts for a fraction of their normal price if you take the time to wait for sales and watch the flyers with a keen eye. Yes, Black Friday is over, but many stores continue to extend sales or rotate different items in and out of sale all month leading up to the holidays. If you’re savvy, you can find a great price on a smart TV or the latest Fitbit.
Ask the person what they want. Far too many people become consumed with giving the best gift ever just to buy something totally random and expensive on a whim, assuming that the other person will want it. The best gifts are always the thing you actually have your heart set on but, for whatever reason, haven’t been able to justify buying for yourself. Ask the person what they really want—it’s the easiest way to guarantee you’ll be giving them a gift their eyes will light up for.
Focus on their hobbies. If you’d rather surprise someone than ask them what they want, but still want to make sure you’re giving them something they’ll love, look at how they spend their free time. People’s hobbies give you the best insight into the kind of gifts they’ll love. Do they spend their free time cooking? Kitchen gadgets are your domain. Do they play sports? Gift them the latest gear? Are they music or book nerds? You know where to find those.
Figure out what they don‘t already have. Once you know what their hobbies are, you have to be sure you’re buying them a book or gadget they don’t already have. This can take some sleuthing, but if you’re close to this person, it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out exactly what is missing from their collection. And again, you can always just ask them.
