While masking and distancing may be with us for a while, the good news is that most colleges and universities will be welcoming students back into the dorm this fall. For campus-bound freshmen, furnishing a dorm room is like a crash course in small-space, communal living. But beyond the basics, like practical linens and fun décor items, there are a few essentials many families may not think about.

  • Power Outlet Strip – Roommates share everything, so it’s a good idea to send along a surge protector power strip with at least six outlets and four USB ports.
  • Mattress Topper – That extra-long twin mattress your student will be sleeping on may be a dreamier place to crash with a comfy mattress topper on top of it.
  • Over-the-Door Mirror – Everyone needs a full-length mirror. An over-the-door model can help your student head out to class knowing they look their best.
  • Lap Desk – A stable lap desk can help you work comfortably and efficiently from any seated positioneven in bed.
  • Clip-On Reading Light A gooseneck model that attaches to a desk or headboard will provide enough reading and homework light.
  • Mini-Desk Fan – This will keep the air circulating while students work, sleep or even microwave snackswithout disturbing their roommate.
  • Under-the-Bed Plastic Drawers – A few of these can provide a place to store snacks, accessories and dorm room extras to help keep clutter to a minimum.
  • Portable Shower Caddy – Heading to the showera college rite of passagewill be so much easier with bathing accessories corralled into an easy-to-carry shower caddy.
  • Stick-On Hooks – With a few of these on hand, your student can hang wall art, bulletin boards or more clothes in the closet without putting holes in the wall.
