Growing a garden can be a lot of fun and a very rewarding task, but it can require a lot of your time. While gardening will always require time and dedication, it’s possible to foster your garden’s growth without sacrificing all of your free time.
Bring Out Your Muffin Tin
An unseasoned gardener can try to fit too many plants in a tight space, making them unable to flourish long-term. Ensure your seeds and starters are planted in a uniform line and spaced perfectly apart by using a muffin tin to create a divot in the soil. This makes it easy to know exactly where to dig a hole for your seed or starter.
Self-Watering Wine Bottle
Have a planter on your porch or deck that you don’t want to constantly water? Use a large wine bottle and fill it up with water. Simply place the wine bottle upside down with its neck sticking in the soil. The water will slowly water the planter and will make your job easier.
Crack a Few Eggs
Save your eggshells to add calcium to your soil and deter pests. Cracking a few eggs is an excellent idea if you have noticed that your fruits and veggies have been sampled before you can pick them. Slugs and snails don’t like the feeling of pointy eggshells and will avoid devouring your precious strawberries.
Get a Timer Attachment for Your Hose
If an in-ground sprinkler system seems out of reach, consider simply getting a timer attachment for your hose. This allows you to easily water your garden with a standard sprinkler on your hose, without having to turn the water on and off every day. This inexpensive purchase makes your garden easy to care for whether you’re home that day or are away for a few days at a time.
Buy a Shopping Basket
Shopping baskets that many grocery stores use are ideal for picking your veggies. Just like a standard bucket or wicker basket, the handles mean your harvest will be easy to carry without dropping anything. But a shopping basket has additional benefits, its plastic build means it’s durable and can get wet, and its slots allow you to rinse your veggies right out in the garden before bringing them indoors. Some companies make baskets specifically for gardening in a shopping basket design for this reason.
