Laundromats provide a convenient space for those who maybe don’t have in-house washing appliances, live in a complex with shared laundry or for those with large loads of laundry that their machines can’t handle. Streamlining your laundromat experience will help make this chore less daunting and more efficient. Here are some tips for your next, or first, trip to the laundromat.

Sort Strategically
Before heading to the laundromat, save time and energy by sorting your clothes at home. Separate whites, colors and delicates into clearly labeled bags or baskets. This will minimize the risk of accidentally mixing colors and ruining your favorite items. Be sure to check care labels to identify any special washing instructions.

Pack the Essentials
In addition to packing up your laundry, make sure to include detergent, fabric softener, stain remover and dryer sheets. Though some laundromats offer these for purchase, they may not have the brand you prefer, and purchasing them full size will ultimately save money.

Go at the Right Time
Laundromats can have times of day, or days of the week, where they are more busy than others. Plan your visit for off-peak hours to avoid the crowds and long waiting times. Midweek mornings or afternoons are often quieter than weekends or evenings. Strategic timing can turn a potentially stressful trip into a quick and efficient laundry day.

Optimize Different Machines
Most laundromats have a variety of machine styles, from small to extra-large. Maximize your efficiency by choosing the machines that match your load of laundry. Overloading a small machine can result in poor cleaning, while using a large machine for a small load is wasteful. Be mindful of the recommended load capacity for each machine, ensuring your clothes get the appropriate care they need.

Practice Laundry Etiquette
Because laundromats are often a public space, this means other people will come in to use machines, possibly when you are there. Be mindful of the time your loads spend in the machines, promptly removing them once the cycle is complete. Fold or hang your clothes away from the machines to allow others access. If the laundromat is busy, avoid using multiple machines at once.
