Everyone knows that first impressions are lasting impressions and when it comes to selling a home, your landscaping can say a lot to a prospective buyer. A green lawn, well-manicured trees, and colorful flowers are particularly important. So, when putting your house on the market, take these things into account:

Clean your yard: If you have sticks, twigs, and leaves all over your property, get out there and clear them out. Not only do they look unpleasant, they send a signal to potential buyers that moving into your home is going to mean a lot of work.

Make Your Lawn Green: A healthy lawn looks good and also inviting. If it’s marked by crabgrass, weeds, and dead spots, buyers likely aren’t going to envision themselves relaxing or barbecuing in the yard.

Add some flowers: Flowers liven up a property, adding some color to break up the green of grass and leaves. Plant flowers in front of the house and be sure to trim bushes, especially those that bloom flowers so that the flowers pop.

Set up a backyard area: You don’t have to spend a fortune to set up a nice, inviting area in the backyard. A patio furniture set, a grill, some plants and a fire pit will help buyers envision themselves enjoying the great outdoors after they move in.

Get rid of those personal touches: You may think your garden gnome brings good luck, or that the pink flamingo in the front yard is kitschy and fun, but prospective buyers may not have the same tastes. If you have a playset that your kids have beaten up, have it removed; make your home look new for new buyers.

Let there be light: Some homebuyers will drive by your house at night, either to see what it looks like after the sun goes down, or because it’s a convenient time to show it to friends and family. Walkway and path lights are affordable, easy to install, and add a nice ambiance to the home.

Don’t overspend: Don’t invest in expensive flowers or equipment. Just like staging a home’s interior, the idea is to present your landscaping in a way that looks appealing while allowing buyers to envision how your yard can become theirs.
