Moving to a new place can be intimidating, and cities, in particular, can feel especially isolating. Amid all the hustle and bustle, it can feel lonely to be in a sea of people but not know anyone. Here are six ways to make some friends in your city:

1. Join an Interest Group
Whether you’re a parent, sports fan or art collector, cities have tons of interest groups. To find new-moms’ groups and more, you can search online for the one that’s right for you. The common experience or interest will help you make friends, fast.

2. Get Involved in a Team Sport
Cities around the country have a variety of team sports at different levels of competition and for all age groups. So whether you want to play soccer, softball or even kickball, there is probably a team for you. Not only will you get some exercise, but you’ll meet people at the post-game get-togethers.

3. Volunteer Your Time
Give back to your new community by donating a few hours a week to walking dogs at a shelter, serving food at a soup kitchen or doing some other project. There are large organizations like the Junior League in most areas—or you can find an independent charity to become involved in. You’ll feel good about your commitment to others, and you’ll meet other like-minded people.

4. Get a Job
This is a specific one, but worth mentioning. If you move to a new city and are a freelancer or independent contractor, meeting people can be really tough. Even if you’re naturally social, deadlines can keep you tied to your desk—alone. Taking on even a part-time role in an office can help you get some face-time with new acquaintances.

5. Attend Alumni Events
Many colleges have alumni chapters that host events in major cities. Find out if your alma mater has one in your area—and consider hosting the next mixer!

6. Take Your Dog for a Walk
Walking Fido or taking him to a dog park are great ways to meet other dog owners. Don’t have one? Consider fostering to see if a pet is right for you!
