As the colder weather starts to take over, you’ll be spending more time indoors with your TV. What better time to catch up on some classic Canadian content? We don’t celebrate our art enough, and it’s time to finally change that. If you haven’t seen these classics yet, now’s the time.
The Sweet Hereafter
Adom Egoyan’s poignant film based on the novel of the same name broke hearts in 1997 and still has a 100-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes for good reason. After a school bus crash devastates a small town, a big city lawyer arrives to help the community file a class-action lawsuit that does nothing to truly help those affected. It’s heavy but well worth the journey.
One Week
This 2009 film features Joshua Jackson on a road trip across Canada in an attempt to see all its incredible landmarks. He has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer, so he takes on the journey as a last attempt to find some meaning in life. It is both a road movie and love letter to the country we call home.
Bon Cop, Bad Cop
If you’d prefer a comedy, look no further. This 2006 dark comedy buddy cop film plays out all the tensions that still exist today between French and English speakers in Canada, bringing levity to all that animosity. When a serial killer is striking in both Ontario and Quebec, this unlikely duo must put aside their cultural differences to solve the case.
