Not all that long ago, living in a city meant you had to go to a typical gym and lift weights or run on the treadmill if you wanted to exercise. These days, however, there are plenty of new experiences and activities that offer an alternative way to work out. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with a state-of-the-art fitness center, the reality is that it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for a new activity that will help keep you fit, here are several fun experiences to try out.

Aerial Yoga
For those who enjoy the physical and mental benefits of yoga, you might want to try switching up your routine with an aerial yoga class. Blending elements of aerial dance and traditional yoga, this activity is done with a special hammock that’s used to perform different poses while hanging in the air. Of course, you may find yourself suspended upside down, so be prepared for something a little more adventurous than your regular yoga class.

Rock Climbing
The sport of rock climbing has made its way from the mountains and into the city thanks to an explosion of climbing gyms across the country. If you’ve ever wanted to give it a try but aren’t sure where to start, a lesson at the local gym is the perfect way to learn the ropes, literally. You’re sure to get an exciting workout, as well as a full-on adrenaline rush, while pushing your limits and ascending to new heights.

Boxing
Boxing classes are growing in popularity as more and more people have come to enjoy channeling their inner Rocky. Whether you want to learn self-defense or simply find it soothing to pummel a punching bag, there are plenty of reasons to step in the ring with your trainer and learn how to box. 

Barre
While it’s certainly a gentler fitness experience, a barre class can provide you with an equally engaging form of exercise. By using a ballet barre to perform classical dance movements, you’ll get a full-body workout that significantly improves balance, flexibility and posture, as well as strengthens your core.
