When it comes to the environment, cities are more often associated with traffic and pollution than sustainability. The reality, however, is that a well-planned city with eco-conscious residents can actually be a good thing for the environment. If you’re looking for ways to lower your impact on Mother Nature while still enjoying everything the city has to offer, here are a few tips for doing just that.

Energy-Efficient Buildings
Over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in energy-efficient residential buildings in cities all across the country. Many homebuyers in the luxury sector, in particular, have demonstrated a preference for high-performance buildings that are designed to maximize efficiency, reduce water consumption and are built using environmentally-friendly materials. By choosing to live in such a building, you’ll be doing your part to help Mother Nature.

Grow a Garden
When living in the city, gardening is an excellent way to lower your impact by growing your own vegetables, and, not to mention, stay connected to nature. After all, transporting food from farms to markets and, ultimately, to our homes, plays a significant role in our carbon footprints. If you have a small backyard or are able to join a community garden, you can help decrease the emission of greenhouse gases and also ensure that your produce is truly organic.

Eat Locally
You can’t grow everything in your garden, but you can still do your part by choosing to eat locally. Farmers’ markets and environmentally-conscious grocers are both great options for finding high-quality meat and produce that comes from local farms. While it might cost a little extra, you can feel good about supporting local businesses and helping the environment at the same time.

Go Electric
When it comes to city living, walking and biking are much more viable forms of transportation than if you lived in a rural setting. Sometimes, though, you still need a car to get around, and if that’s the case, an electric car is well worth considering. Plus, eco-friendly cities have designated parking specifically for these vehicles, making your life that much easier while decreasing carbon emissions each day.
