Outdoor decorating may feel like less of a priority when you’re not hosting spring or summer parties. That doesn’t mean your outdoor space should be neglected during the colder seasons when colorful flowers are not around to brighten your space. This year, make sure your outdoor space shines with these tips for decorating in fall and winter.

Deck Out Your Porch
You may think that the cold season means it’s time to pack away all your outdoor furniture, but this doesn’t have to be the case. As long as you are willing to winterize your outdoor furniture and properly care for it through the cold seasons, you can enjoy it throughout the year. Simply ensure that you clean it and use protective sealants when needed. Cover your furniture if a storm is headed your way. Why not enjoy your porch year-round? Not only will it add to your outdoor aesthetic, but you will also enjoy having a place to sip on cocoa or cider on cool afternoons.

Make It Cozy
If you plan to truly enjoy your outdoor space throughout the fall and winter, you will need to make it cozy. Add thick blankets and fur throws on your outdoor furniture. Sealed faux wicker baskets can help ensure that your blankets stay clean when not in use. Consider truly upping the cozy factor with an outdoor fireplace. Nothing says cool weather fun like s’mores and cocoa by the fire. Add a few wooden decor elements to truly add to the cozy cabin atmosphere.

Choose Cool Weather Flowers
While your climate will largely dictate what flowers your outdoor space can host during the cooler seasons, there are a few hardy options that will likely last a long time. Marigolds are a stereotypically fall flower that may live through the first parts of winter, depending on your climate. Autumn violets are often hailed as an ideal flower to feature on your porch or in your yard in the colder months. Their bright and joyous colors will add a much-needed pop to your outdoor areas, plus, they are surprisingly cold resistant.

Opt for Foliage
Flowers alone won’t give your space the texture it needs, so opt for foliage that will add a pop of greenery and depth. Plant hard bushes that enjoy cool weather in pots. Consider adding wheels to any large pots that are too big to carry. If your favorite cool-weather plants are sensitive to freezes, you can always wheel them inside to protect them from a storm. Opt for deep jewel tones, such as marron, navy or emerald green, for added warmth.
