Thrifting is a budget-friendly and ecological way to shop, especially when it comes to home goods. Not only can you find unique and one-of-a-kind items, but they will likely be a fraction of their original price, or the prices of today’s new decor items. With some TLC and a bit of creativity, you can take something old or used, and turn it into something new and uniquely you. Here are some items to keep an eye out for on your next thrift shop stop.

Artwork and Frames
Art is subjective, and often viewed as expensive. However, artwork doesn’t have to cost a ton of money, or be limited to mass-produced options from big-box stores. Thrift stores are full of one-of-a-kind, original pieces, and many of them come in high-quality frames. Whether the original artwork speaks to you and your style, or if you instead remove the artwork and revamp the frame, this is a money-saving tip to add character to your space.

Furniture
Used furniture, whether slightly worn or vintage, can become a statement piece in your home. You can also take on some DIY projects, giving old or used furniture a new look, life or use. Most furniture found at thrift shops is often wooden, which can be of great value due to soaring prices for materials and high prices for new, particle board-style pieces. For furniture like couches, armchairs or chairs with any upholstery, don’t be afraid of stains or rips. Fabric can be cleaned and upholstery can be replaced to match your personal style.

Glassware
When shopping for wine glasses, water glasses or even vases, prices can add up fast. Head to your local thrift store to find incredible deals on crystal, tumblers and even wine stems. Oftentimes, you can even come across an entire set, creating a cohesive and consistent collection. Vases of different heights, shapes, sizes or even themes are also a favorite at thrift stores. One-of-a-kind vases can add a lot of character to your space, especially paired with fresh flowers.

Books
Reading is fundamental, but the cost of purchasing books can also add up fast. Books are great finds at thrift stores, whether you use them for reading or home decor. Take your time in the book section, as you may score a vintage edition or something you wouldn’t find in your local bookstore or library. For decor, if you find hardcover books, take off the sleeve and see if the binding will match the color scheme or theme of your home decor, and place it on a shelf, tabletop or end table for added character.
